Roatan Orchids
The island of Roatan has many beautiful flowers and orchids native to the island. Orchids are in a family of plants called "monocots", the second largest group of flowering plants in the world. There are over 25,000 species of naturally occurring Orchids, there are maybe two dozen species of orchids that are native to Roatan. Botanists have now produced over 100,000 species of hybrid orchids. Many of Roatan's orchids are parasitic and depend on a host tree or plant to feed off of.
There are many Roatan visitors that did not come to Roatan for any underwater activities. These are the Orchid lovers that have traveled all the way to Roatan just to get a look at the stunning orchids of Roatan. Many residents of Roatan have collections of dozens of the islands orchids. A quick walk through any of the neighborhoods on Roatan and you will see many houses adorned with orchids in front of the house and on the balconies.
Most people do not realize that the vanilla bean comes from orchids that grow on Roatan. Vanilla is the most widely cultivated orchid in the world. Vanilla is grown on Roatan and harvested by the islanders. The residents of Roatan use the aged vanilla beans for flavoring and making vanilla bean extract. The island of Roatan has many other species of plants besides orchids. Banana trees, coconut trees, pineapple, cacao trees (chocolate trees) and hibiscus are all native to the island of Roatan. There are many imported species of plants that thrive in Roatan's tropical rainforest environment.
