Roatan Iguanas
Arch's Iguana and Marine Park is home to over 4000 of
the largest Iguanas you have ever laid eyes on. They are not
mean or aggressive iguanas, just curious and friendly cause
they seem to know they are safe at Arch's. Iguana is the
main ingredient in iguana stew, a favorite of the Roatan
locals. It seems that Iguana is known throughout the area as
"Caribbean Chicken". Yes, that's right, Iguana is the other white meat! Sherman Arch is doing what he can to protect a breeding
population of iguanas on Roatan.
In
addition to all of the iguanas, Arch's Iguana and Marine
Park also has several sea turtles, very large tarpon, over
200 lobsters, parrots and several monkeys for visitors to
view and enjoy. Admission is $8.00 US per person, large or
small. Lots of interesting things to see and do. Plenty of
photo opportunities at Arch's Iguana and Marine Park so make
sure you bring your cameras and fresh batteries. Arch's is
also a great place to shoot video of your children
interacting with the iguanas of Roatan Honduras.
In 2004 the Roatan spiny tailed iguana was
listed as critically endangered due to small population size
and on going habitat destruction. There is relatively little
known about the Roatan spiny tailed iguana. They are closely
related to the green iguana, common throughout the Caribbean
and central America. The Roatan spiny tailed iguana is more
aggressive than the green iguana and do not make good pets
or do good in captivity. The Roatan spiny tailed iguana can
typically grow to 24-36 inches in length and enjoy soaking
up the sun on large rocks or in trees. Arch's is doing a
great job of providing a safe habitat for the Roatan spiny
tailed iguana to thrive.
Children
love to pet and play with the iguanas at Arch's Iguana and
Marine park. You can find Arch's in French Key, just
past the French Harbor turn off. Open daily from 8:00 AM to
4:00 PM. Iguana feeding time is at noon, and is probably the
most interesting time of day to visit Arch's as over 4,000
iguanas seem to come out of no where looking to be fed.
Arch's Iguana and Marine Park may be found on the main road
through French Key, just west of the French Harbor turn off.
No appointments are needed, unless you have a group of over
50 people, then please call Arch's at 445-7743.
